Research for Companies & Municipalities

Shaping the Future Through Research Collaborations

Together, the three alliance universities rank among the most research-intensive universities of applied sciences in Germany. More than 600 researchers work alongside around 30,000 students on countless projects with a wide range of focus areas—forming an alliance with boundless creative and innovative potential.

What distinguishes research at universities of applied sciences from research at universities?

Research at universities primarily seeks answers to theoretical questions. In contrast, research activities at universities of applied sciences focus on applied research. This involves the practical application of scientific knowledge and aims to solve real-world problems of the modern world. As a result, it opens up attractive opportunities for cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders, such as municipalities, companies, and interest groups.

Whether it is about exploring application potentials of hydrogen systems in small and medium-sized enterprises or developing solutions for municipal challenges—such as the planning and management of cycling infrastructure—applied research provides support, analysis, and concrete answers.

Research Inquiries

Do you have questions or requests related to specific research fields or topics? We provide well-founded research and practice-oriented approaches for municipalities and companies.

For Companies

If you are looking for contacts at universities of applied sciences for research collaborations, you have come to the right place. We are interested in you—and in the challenges your company is currently facing.

As a central point of contact, we facilitate connections to researchers from all three alliance universities. More than 600 professors work on a wide range of topics. Whether you represent industry and crafts, trade and services, or an association, we will find the ideal academic support for your project.

It is important to note that research work cannot be provided free of charge. In most cases, companies contribute a share of the funding. However, co-financing through public funding programs offers a very attractive opportunity to access additional resources and thereby ease the burden on your own R&D budget. In addition to this so-called grant-funded research, we also offer contract research. These projects are tailored precisely to your specific question and are subject to confidentiality.

The knowledge transfer resulting from such projects—through research, development, and application between universities and companies—benefits you, your organization, our researchers, and the development of the region.

We are happy to advise you on all implementation and financing options.

There are numerous examples of support in the municipal sector. For instance, Hochschule Bochum, together with other institutes, is developing the LANUV study on municipal heat planning in North Rhine-Westphalia. The KomMonitor software, also developed at Hochschule Bochum, provides efficient decision support across many municipal fields (e.g., spatial planning). It consolidates data, enables structured analysis, and makes this information accessible to all relevant decision-makers across the administration. KomMonitor liefert effiziente Entscheidungsunterstützung in vielen Kommunalen Bereichen (z.B. Raumplanung, etc.)

Licensing

The Ruhr University Alliance brings together the three major universities of applied sciences in the Ruhr region. Through the developments and ideas of its researchers, it makes an important contribution to the economic and social transformation of the region and beyond.

Together with PROvendis GmbH, the central patent and commercialization service provider for universities in North Rhine-Westphalia, inventions are evaluated, protected, and successfully transferred into practical application. Many of these innovations have high market potential and reach companies through licensing or sales—some even form the foundation for the creation of innovative start-ups.

Technology Offers

Companies have the opportunity to explore our continuously growing portfolio of available intellectual property rights and technologies. Whether to expand an existing product range, optimize processes, or serve as a starting point for new business models, targeted exploration can provide valuable impulses. If you are interested, we are happy to support you in identifying suitable innovations and transferring them into practice.

As part of innovation2business.nrw, PROvendis supports universities in the targeted commercialization of their offerings. The portfolio is continuously expanding—so it’s worth checking back regularly!

Selected Research Projects at a Glance

The research funding activities of the Ruhr University Alliance and the Applied Excellence Department are specifically dedicated to supporting regional projects. This includes the implementation of concepts for sustainable energy, mobility, and digitalization.

Digital Methods in Architecture

The EINZ project explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into architecture in combination with environmentally compatible materials. The focus is on design methods for sustainable, resource-efficient architecture in which the reuse of regional building materials plays a significant role.

Sustainable IGA 2027

The International Garden Exhibition (IGA) will take place in North Rhine-Westphalia for the first time in 2027—and for the first time in the Ruhr metropolitan region. And it has set itself ambitious goals: the exhibition addresses global future challenges, puts sustainable companies, start-ups, and project initiators in the spotlight, and showcases the region’s green highlights. It offers unique events and programs, high-quality cultural experiences, and interactive activities—all while exploring one central question: Wie wollen wir morgen leben?
